SURFING AT THE PARIS 2024 OLYMPICS: QUALIFYING CRITERIA

With the qualification process for the Paris 2024 Olympics in full swing it’s time to take a look at the qualifying criteria for the upcoming Olympic surfing tournament.

Following its impressive debut at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics, surfing will take to the Olympic stage for the second time at Paris 2024. This time, the event will take place at one of the best surf breaks on the planet – Teahupoo, Tahiti.

The Paris 2024 surfing event will feature a total of 48 surfers, with an equal representation of 24 male and 24 female surfers. This is an increase of eight surfers from the previous Olympics. Similar to the Tokyo Games, the road to Paris involves performances from both the International Surfing Association (ISA) and the World Surf League (WSL).

The qualification process comprises two methods - athlete qualification and National Olympic Committee (NOC) team qualification. Surfers can earn a spot in the Games through various events such as the 2023 WSL Championship Tour, the 2023 and 2024 ISA World Surfing Games, and the 2023 Pan American Games. NOC teams, on the other hand, can only qualify at the 2022 and 2024 ISA World Surfing Games.
