ESPORTS

HISTORY

Esports dates back to the early 1970s when Stanford University held a tournament for a game called Spacewar. However, it wasn’t until 1980 that the first large-scale esports competition was held when Atari sponsored the Space Invaders Championship. The event attracted over 10,000 players and received widespread media attention since Space Invaders was a household name at the time.

Competitive gaming picked up pace in the 1990s, and in 1997 the Red Annihilation Tournament for Quake was held. The tournament which is widely regarded as the world’s first Esports event attracted over 2000 players. The 90s also saw the initial releases of Warcraft and Starcraft, both of which would go on to become massively successful online franchises.

The introduction of broadband and other technological advances such as xBox Live bringing online play to consoles in the early 2000s helped spur the growth of Esports even further. In the last decade we have witnessed the rise of live streaming through platforms like Twitch, allowing players from across the globe to bring in a steady income without having to travel to  tournaments.
